Young Carers at Preston School

At Preston School, we know that some children help to look after someone they love at home. This could be a parent, grandparent, brother, sister or another family member.

Being a young carer is something to be proud of, but we also understand that it can sometimes feel difficult or overwhelming. We want every child to feel happy, supported and able to enjoy school. Our Young Carers Team is here to listen, help and make sure no child feels they have to manage on their own.

What is a Young Carer?

A young carer is someone under the age of 18 who helps care for a family member who has:

  • a physical illness or disability
  • a long-term health condition
  • a mental health condition
  • difficulties with drugs or alcohol

Young carers may help by:

  • making meals
  • tidying or cleaning around the house
  • helping someone get dressed or move around
  • looking after younger brothers or sisters
  • offering comfort and emotional support

Every young carer’s role is different, and no job is too small to matter.

Could My Child Be a Young Carer?

Sometimes children don’t realise they are young carers because helping at home has always been part of everyday life.

Your child may benefit from extra support if they:

  • often seem tired
  • appear worried or distracted
  • find it difficult to join in with clubs or activities
  • spend less time with friends
  • become upset or anxious more easily
  • have changes in their behaviour

Every child is different, so they may not show any of these signs. If you’re unsure, we’re always happy to have a chat.

How We Can Help

Our Young Carers Team is here to make sure children feel safe, listened to and supported.

We can offer:

  • Friendly one-to-one check-ins with a trusted adult
  • Fun lunchtime sessions where young carers can relax, make friends and enjoy activities together
  • Support and advice for families
  • Noticeboard (located next to Head of Year office)
  • Dedicated google classroom where we stay in touch with our Young Carers in school,.
  • Referrals to local Young Carers services for additional help outside of school

We want every young carer to have the same opportunities as everyone else—to learn, play, make friends and achieve their very best.
