Business Studies provides students with an understanding of the commercial world and speaks directly to young people's curiosity about how brands, markets, and economies. The curriculum enables students to contextualise important economic and corporate events happening in a global marketplace that is changing more rapidly than ever. It helps them understand their vital role as consumers, employees, and future entrepreneurs. Business Studies is much more than a list of financial equations or corporate structures; it is a viewpoint and a structured way of making sense of the world by examining the dynamic links between human choices, operational processes, and financial outcomes.
Our business curriculum reflects the needs of all our students, regardless of their starting point, allowing them to achieve their full potential. In designing our curriculum, we have created a program of learning that is ambitious, challenging, and rigorous. Our curriculum covers a broad range of contemporary commercial topics, including business activity, marketing, human resources, operations, finance, and external influences.
We embrace highly topical and challenging themes, such as ethical and environmental impacts, digital distribution, flexible working practices, and the effects of globalisation, enabling our students to evaluate the socioeconomic responsibilities of modern enterprises. Our curriculum also develops critical quantitative and qualitative skills, such as break-even analysis, cash-flow forecasting, interpretative data analysis, and the evaluative skills required for strategic decision-making.
The acquisition of technical business terminology is central to the course. Students are explicitly taught to use professional language through our six golden threads: Enterprise, Marketing, Human Resources, Operations, Finance, and Interdependency. We want students to see how Business Studies is directly relevant to the world of work. We do this through lesson activities, such as real-world case study role-plays and investment decision-making tasks, which reflect the choices made by industry leaders every day. The department offers enhancement opportunities throughout the year, including local business enterprise visits and insight days with regional employers.
