Medical Care

About our Medical Care

The school has a wide range of support available for students with additional medical needs. This includes a team of first aid trained staff, as well as two senior first aid staff who oversee our wider approach to medical needs.

Allergy Safety Policy

At Preston School, the health, safety and wellbeing of every student is a priority. We recognise the potentially serious risks associated with allergies and anaphylaxis and are committed to ensuring that appropriate measures are in place to identify, manage and respond to these risks effectively.

Our Allergy Safety Policy sets out the arrangements we have in place to support students with allergies and to promote a safe and inclusive school environment. Our Allergy Safety Policy is outlined here.

Reporting Medical Conditions

Step One – Update the Arbor App

Twice a year the school will send a reminder to update your information on the Arbor App. This includes things like your address and phone number, but importantly also medical information. As part of the medical information you can submit a severity and likely treatment for each condition.

Important: If the medical condition has a high severity please also email the Head of Year.

Step Two – Triage by our Pastoral Team

Our pastoral team will accept the change into Arbor and then triage the internal steps required to help manage the medical condition. In some cases, it will be decided that the student needs an Individual Healthcare Plan. This will be the case if:

  • they have an allergy which has a functional impact on them in their school / work setting;
  • they are at risk of harm as a result of their allergy and
  • they require arrangements which are additional to or different from those made generally.

Step Three – Individual Healthcare Plan Agreed

Where appropriate, an Individual Healthcare Plan will be written by the school in consultation with the student and their family. The Individual Healthcare Plan will set out the additional and/or different arrangements that will be in place in school for supporting the pupil with their medical condition or allergy, including in emergency situations. Any allergy, asthma, or other action plan issued by a healthcare professional will be attached to the Individual Healthcare Plan. Individual Healthcare Plans are sent home to be agreed by families before being shared with staff.
