Our Art & Design curriculum is designed to inspire, engage, and challenge students by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment and create their own works of art. It fosters critical thinking and cultural awareness through the study of art history and significant contextual works. Students develop proficiency in a range of techniques, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and photography. Through the use of sketchbooks and regular opportunities to present their work, students are encouraged to reflect, refine their ideas, and develop a unique artistic voice. Ultimately, our curriculum aims to nurture creativity, cultural understanding, and an appreciation for the transformative power of art.
Art at Preston School welcomes students with different prior attainments and our curriculum is inclusive and tailored to meet the needs of all learners, enabling every student to reach their full potential. In its design, we have developed beyond the National Curriculum, drawing on guidance from the National Society for Education in Art and Design to create a programme that is ambitious, challenging, and rigorous. Our curriculum spans a wide range of topics, including the human form, self-image, still life, printmaking, painting techniques, sculpture, and photographic media.
We embrace contemporary and thought-provoking themes such as identity, gender, race, religion, and sexuality, exploring how art can serve as a powerful medium for communication and expression.
