autism unitMy name is Rachel Walker and I have the privilege of being the Teacher in charge of the newly built Preston Centre for ASD students here at Preston School. Students are assigned a place in one of the county's autism bases by Complex Cases Panel in negotiation with families, Somerset Autism and Communication service and the host school. It is an extremely exciting venture and I'm proud to be an integral part of it.

The new building is now complete and we are in the process of furnishing and resourcing in preparation to open. We have appointed staff and they will be starting their induction in the near future, in order to help with the transition of students and setting up of the base. They will also be working with subject areas to put together our differentiated curriculum which will run in parallel with the school. Our first students will join us after the Easter holiday and around that time we will have our official opening - watch this space. It is a beautiful purpose built space which will allow us to provide specialist ASD provision whilst still having the benefits of being on a large, well-resourced school site.

Whilst being housed in a specialty designed building, we very much see ourselves as a part of Preston School. All pupils attending the Preston Centre will be full members of the school and will access the educational and social opportunities available to students here at Preston School. We will, due to the nature of our students, have an increased focus on language development, social interaction and will explicitly be teaching appropriate social, behaviour and life skills.
